We are currenly harvesting Marselan, the grape we were the first to plant in Romania

Marselan is a crossing of Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache

In 1961, French ampelographer Paul Truel was working on a project in which INRA (National Institute for Agricultural Reseach) and ENSAM (National Superior School of Arts and Crafts) were joining forces to create grape vine varietals with high yields, big berries and moderate quality. This is how Marselan was created, by a crossing of Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache, which proved to be “inadequate” to the project goal: the berries were too small and the high yields expected were impossible to reach. Moreover, the wines made of Marselan were rather high quality wines, with dark colour, a large array of flavors and quite a long aging ability.
The grape was disregarded at that time as it was not considered a commercial success. It is not until the ’90s, when the interest for valuable wines was renewed, that the grape was brought forward and started to spread, first in Languedoc and in the South of the Rhone Valley, then in Spain and the USA.
In Romania, Marselan first appeared as an experiment, when French consultant Ghislaine Guiraud tried to get a thorough grasp of the characters and virtues of the soil in Segarcea. It soon became obvious that Marselan has an extraordinary potential here.  As a proof of our trust in the strength and beauty of the wine made of this grape, the 2008 vintage was selected to meet a demand that requested  the maximum care and delicacy of Domeniul Coroanei Segarcea: the creation of a line of wine bearing the name of Her Royal Highness Princess Margareta of Romania.
This is how 100% Marselan was created and time proved it was worth trying and trusting. A bit feminine, elegant, but determined, with highly complex flavors and  an optimum consumption time that only began in late 2011, this wine became a symbol of the generosity on the land in Segarcea.  In the following years, Marselan became an important grape, almost essential in creating two of the three red blends for Minima Moralia, the suprepremium collection. In Respect it meets the force and strength of its parent Cabernet Sauvignon and it results in an intense and complex wine, with flavors ranging from rum and coconut to fresh forest fruit.  Marselan mellows and refines the almost violent intensity of Cabernet, leading it to a warmer more friendly expression and full of life.
Add to this blend a drop of Syrah and you will obtain Devotion blend. It is easy to imagine how the pepper and spices of Syrah (which undergoes carbonic maceration with undestemmed grapes) develops and amplifies the blend of Marselan and Cabernet, adding glow and playful notes without losing the sobriety proper to all the wines in this line.
