Vinalies Internationales 2014: Gold for Principesa Margareta, Marselan 2009

The 17th Vinalies Internationales Competition brought 3 medals to  Domeniul Coroanei Segarcea wines.

Domeniul Coroanei was awarded the gold medal for Marselan 2009 from Principesa Margareta collection and silver medals for both Blue Train Chardonnay 2013 and Blue Train Cabernet Sauvignon 2011.
Vinalies Internationales is one of the most important wine competitions worldwide. The 100 international jury members taste about 3500 samples. The competition is organised every year by the Union des Oenologues de France (French oenologists’ association) and it is first of all appreciated for the accuracy of the evaluations. Based on this criteria the competition was granted in 2010 the ISO 9001 quality certification.
         About the winners
Principesa Margareta – red wine 2009 is now in its second vintage and it continues to be the only Romanian wine made of Marselan grapes. Covering 10ha, Marselan’s yield was limited to 6 to/ha in order to insure particular extract. After 18 months of French barrel aging, it resulted in a balanced wine, in which red fruit (strawberries, raspberries) overlap the flavors extracted from new oak – tobacco, cocoa, leather and liquorice. The high acidity contributes to defining a wine with a long aging potential.
For Chardonnay Blue Train 2013, the hand-picked grapes, limited to 8 to/ha, went through long fermentation. Then the wine was aged on fine lees, in new and second use oak barrels. Following these procedures, the wine acquired a classical dense structure. However, the oak notes do not cover typical chardonnay flavors of white fruit and tropical fruit.
Cabernet Sauvignon is the grape that has the highest constancy in quality and expression. Cultivated in the vineyard that enjoys the highest number of sunshine hours each year, Cabernet Sauvignon reaches each time full ripeness and acquires a spectacular range of flavors, which guarantees quality but also long aging ability. The 2011 vintage, limited to an yield of 6 to 8 to/ha, was not an exception. The hand-picked grapes were fermented for about 8 weeks in order to insure deep color but also full extraction of flavors. The wine was then aged for 8 to 18 months in French and American oak, new and second use barrels, taking into account to emphasize the grape characters: flavors of red and black fruit, mellow tannins and athletic body.
