This week-end we harvest Sauvignon Blanc and Sauvignon Gris

Sauvignon Blanc, new and old in the same grape

Leader of the new face of wine, highly promoted by the New World, Sauvignon Blanc lead the fashion of explosive intense wines, with strong and persistent flavours. Born in France, with a   paternity disputed between  Loire Valley and Bordeaux, this grape has  lived many centuries in classical climates,  producing the famous  sweet Sauternes or the fruity wines of Bordeaux  in Graves and Entre Deux-Mers, in sea climate, as well as the flavoured Sancerre and Pouilly Fumé wines in continental climate. In New Zealand, it was the vanguard of screw cap wines and in North America Robert Mondavi created the Fumé Blanc fashion.
This is an adaptable grape, whose final expression depends to a large extent on the climate. It can be grassy and acid in cold climates or fruity in warmer climates.  Modern technology has equally made possible the emphasis of certain expressions by using selected yeasts and enzymes, which lead to the certain levelling of style, especially for entry-level wines.
Wherever it is planted, in whatever expression, this grape – parent of the Cabernet Sauvignon “king” – wrote the modern history of oenology at the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century. In Segarcea, Sauvignon Blanc is one of the high performance grapes, not in yield per ha (on the contrary!) but in the constant quality that this grape acquires every year.  Even in its simplest expression, in Prestige line, the wine is expressive, complex and bright, with a minimum of residual sugar meant to balance the lively, fresh whole.
One of the proofs that this grape has particular performance in Segarcea is the collection of accolades and awards that Sauvignon Blanc Prestige (aged on fine lees with bâtonnage for 3 to 5 months) is granted each year, in all the competitions it participates. In this expression, Segarcea Sauvignon Blanc manages to convey the terroir where it is grown, the 44° parallel, bordering both warm and cold  climates: a wine that brings together flavors of both worlds, from grassy and flower notes to exotic fruit.
Finally, its aromatic generosity has recommended it for integration along with Pinot Gris, Fetească Albă, barreled Chardonnay and fresh Chardonnay in the most awarded blend of Minima Moralia, Honor. Even though the varietal characters are not sensible here, the personality of this grape contributes to a large extent to the harmony and complexity of the blend.
