These days we are harvesting Fetească Albă

Fetească Albă, tradition and delicacy

In 2006, ONIV (national organization gathering the players in the vine growing and winemaking field in Romania) described Fetească Albă as the most cultivated grape in Romania, covering over 23.000 ha. Following recent replanting, we don’t know where it actually ranks in popularity all the more so as most Romanian vintners seek balance between whites and reds. It is certain though that this varietal is still among the most outspread.
There is a simple explanation to this: during the 1.500 years since this grape was obtained by popular selection of  Fetească Neagră, it was able to adapt in the most diverse microclimates  in the country and it is currently grown in Moldova, Muntenia, Transilvania, Banat, Maramureş and Oltenia.
Its expressions are among the most diverse depending on the yield, the altitude and the soil.  Fetească Albă produces rustic, popular, usually semi-dry wines as well as sweet wines, suitable for aging. Lately though modern technology and the concern for quality have determined the new wave producers to elaborate dry Fetească Albă, obtaining a wine of unusual delicacy, rarely to be found even in the most famous vineyards of the world.  Displaying sweet extremely delicate flavors of white flowers, fine and lively acidity, Fetească Albă was accepted in the last decade among the spectacular wines that can proudly represent Romanian wine abroad.
Domeniul Coroanei Segarcea was also part of this endeavor. For several years now the varietal has been carefully explored, tested and it now displays the most beautiful expressions it could have acquired. In Elite line it is mostly a summer wine, uplifting and fresh with lively acidity and delicate fruit. In Prestige line, the battonage used during the aging of the wine on fine lees has turned it into a seductive product, of rare finesse, crispy in the first months and light, almost aerial after the lively acidity is replaced by floral notes.
It is actually so spectacular that it has found its place in Minima Moralia Honor, one of the most valuable and awarded blends created in Segarcea. Along with barreled and fresh Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Sauvignon Blanc, Fetească Albă is partly responsible for the youth one can find  among the fresh and  mature flavors; it brings lightness and aerial sensations in the core of a blend that is dense, intense, buttery and vanilla.
